Investment scams often borrow the language of legitimate analysis. Knowing the most common warning signs is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and the people around you.
Warning signs
- Guaranteed or “risk-free” returns. No analysis and no strategy can guarantee results. Anyone who promises certain profits is misrepresenting how markets work.
- Private messages and “VIP” groups. Unsolicited contact on social media or messaging apps, often with screenshots of past wins, is a classic pattern.
- Pressure to act quickly. Countdown offers, “last chance” messages and secrecy are designed to stop you from thinking things through.
- Requests to transfer money or crypto. Especially to personal accounts or wallets, or to “unlock” withdrawals with an extra fee.
- Impersonation. Scammers frequently pretend to represent real companies, apps or public figures.
Protecting yourself
- Check whether a firm is authorised by the financial regulator in your country before investing.
- Never share passwords, one-time codes or wallet recovery phrases.
- Be sceptical of performance screenshots; they are easy to fabricate.
- Talk to someone you trust before transferring money.
